Our 32 favorite foods to put cheese on

We think cheese improves almost everything. You probably agree unless you're vegan or lactose intolerant. Cheese pairs well with bread, meat, vegetables, and fruits. We forget how versatile cheese is. We made this list to celebrate National Cheese Lover's Day on January 20. Here are 32 cheese-friendly foods.

As promised, apple pie is one of our favourite cheese-topped foods. When faced with the option of cheese or no cheese, we'll always choose cheese. Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze, according to an old saying. Give us the dairy, please.

Cream cheese is a popular spreadable cheese. We have chive, veggie, honey, and other flavours at the grocery store (and breakfast joints). How's your bagel game? Try Genius Kitchen's smoked salmon bagel recipe. We approve.

Why not add melted cheese to your baked potato along with butter, sour cream, chives, and bacon bits? If we could only have one potato topping, it would be cheese. We don't have to choose. This Delish recipe has even more! (Au gratin potatoes are runner-up.)

We like extra cheese on spicy pinto beans or smoky baked beans. When we're alone, we'd rather eat beans and cheese than cereal.

Parents nowadays sneak vegetables into kids' food by making them seem healthy, but we like the old-fashioned way: covering veggies with melted cheese. Why skip cheese on broccoli when a quick cheddar sauce can be made? (Better than broccoli in a cake.)

If putting cheese on a cake or cupcake sounds weird, you've forgotten about cream cheese. This ingredient makes the best frosting for red velvet cake, carrot cake, or any other dessert. It's delicious by the spoonful! Red velvet cake? Sally's Baking Addiction offers a layered version.

For the best pairing of chicken and cheese, order (or make) chicken parmesan. Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses double the fun.

Have you noticed how cinnamon bun icings vary? There's also buttercream and cream cheese. Pillsbury's easy-to-make buns offer all three. You already know our recommendation.

Since cojita is so common, it's easy to make your own cheesy, spicy street corn at home, especially with this recipe from Serious Eats.
