Max Verstappen returned to Florida Winter Series just over eight years after making his professional racing debut in the Sunshine State. On Sunday in Miami, he completed 57 laps.
Verstappen won the Miami Grand Prix, holding off a late charge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Verstappen had previously won the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Italy.
Leclerc finished second, with Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz taking third.
Verstappen now trails Leclerc by 19 points in the drivers' championship, 104–85. Sergio Pérez, another Red Bull driver, is third with 66 points. Fifth-placed Mercedes' George Russell (59 points) and Sainz (53)
After the race, Leclerc said his car struggled with medium tyres and he hoped to pass Verstappen in the closing laps.
After the race, Leclerc said it was a physically difficult race. It was a struggle with the medium tyres, and we were overtaken there.
It made our race more difficult after that. We were very close at times, but they had the advantage in terms of pace today.”
The Spanish Grand Prix will be held on May 22 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
