Lauren Bernett, a James Madison University catcher, has died.

On Tuesday, the university announced the death of Lauren Bernett, a former James Madison softball player.

She was a twenty-year-old college student. Unfortunately, the cause of death is still unknown.

For the past two seasons, Bernett had been the team's starting catcher. This year, she was instrumental in bringing the Dukes to the College World Series.

The news of the death of one of our student-athletes breaks our hearts," James Madison University president Jonathan Alger wrote in a statement.

As a member of our softball team, Lauren Bernett was a strong advocate for JMU and our athletics programme.... It's a great thing about college sports because of the people we get to meet every day

At the University of Pennsylvania, Bernett was a biology major with a minor in pre-veterinary medicine. He grew up in McDonald, Pennsylvania.

As a result of Bernett's death, James Madison has decided to cancel its Wednesday doubleheader against Longwood.
