Schools spend billions on high-tech mass shooting defence.

A previous version misidentified a middle schooler's surname. Reid Baeur is incorrect.

Reid Bauer was completing lunch at his Atlanta-area middle school when an emergency alert sounded.

Sixth-grader Reid had never heard the "code red" signal. Cobb County School District in Marietta, Ga., hired a $5 million crisis management service.

AlertPoint was touted as "state-of-the-art technology" that may save students' lives in a school shooting.

AlertPoint sent false alarms to schools in one of the nation's largest districts, prompting lockdowns & terrifying pupils.

Reid, 13, remarked, "Everyone was afraid." Fearing for his life, he switched out all the lights in his classroom & told his students to crouch along a wall.

He said, "One youngster called 911."
