Dave declines high school theatre name after him
Comedian Dave Chappelle declined to name a theatre at his high school in Washington, D.C. after transgender jokes in his latest show, reports said.
Duke Ellington School of the Arts planned a Monday ceremony honouring Chappelle's "ongoing commitment & service to the school & advocacy for the arts."
Theater for Artistic Freedom and Expression will be the new name.
Chappelle said he was "sincerely hurt" by student backlash to "The Closer" when he visited his alma mater in November.
"I took a lot of cold shots in business but that day, they hurt me," Chappelle said. He defended his special & free speech.
"The Closer' is still a Netflix favourite," he said. "More you say I can't say something, the more I must. I can't comment on what you're saying. It's about artistic freedom."
When confronted by students about the special, he said they "talked about gender but not art."
